The idea for the Berlinova Daylight Lab Enlarger came from a conversation with colleagues and friends, where we were brainstorming ideas for starting a business. The concept of an enlarger that doesn’t require a darkroom seemed like a simple and innovative solution—one that could make printing more accessible to everyone. Little did I know, this straightforward idea would turn into a more complicated and challenging process, as expected!
The Goal: The vision was clear—to create a device that could:
👉 Print and develop without the need for a darkroom
👉 Print different film and paper formats
👉 Be affordable enough for beginners to take their first steps into printing
During the initial phase, the idea expanded beyond the original scope: Could we introduce printing for all roll film formats, from 135 to 120? Could we accommodate paper sizes from (10x15cm / 4x6in) to (20x25cm / 8x10in)? However, after considering the complexities, we had to refine the design to a starter version that can print 135 film on (10x15cm / 4x6in) and (13x18cm / 5x7in) paper sizes. This was a necessary adjustment to ensure that we could launch something functional and manageable.
Another challenge was the inclusion of moving parts. While they might sound tempting, introducing them would increase the complexity, the part count, the chances for user error, and ultimately raise the price. To keep things simple, I chose a fixed-focus design, which helped streamline the system. However, this meant we had to use a standardized lens, so the search for the perfect lens began. Unfortunately, nothing on the market met our specific quality and price requirements, so I partnered with a fantastic optical design and manufacturing company in the UK to create a bespoke lens for the Berlinova system. This custom lens is a critical asset to the project, and it opens up many new possibilities for the future.
Now, the dream of a portable darkroom is within reach, but I need your support to make it happen! If you’d like to get your very own Berlinova enlarger and start printing wherever you are, please sign up and help us kickstart production 💙. Together, we can make this vision a reality!
